ACTIVITY DURING WWII
After attending Boot Camp at the Naval Training Station, Newport, Rhode Island he was assigned to the battleship USS Wyoming AG-17
Then served on the troop transport USS Sasan B. Anthony AP-72 which struck a mine and sank off Normandy Beach, France, 07 June 1944. The Guinness Book of World Records 2000 has the sinking of the Susan B. Anthony listed as the largest rescue of people without loss of life; all 2,689 sailors and troops aboard were saved.
Attended
Naval Minecraft Training Center, Little Creek, Virginia; Then assigned to the mine sweeper USS Swerve AM-121, which hit a mine and was sunk off Anzio Beach, Italy, 09 July 1944;
Was assigned to the attack cargo ship USS Winston AKA-94 and served the remained of the war on her.
At the conclusion of hostilities SM3/c Edward J. Sibiga earned the European Theater Campaign medal with 3 stars, the Pacific Theater Campaign medal, Good Conduct medal, American Theater Campaign medal, World War II Victory medal.
Signalman Sibiga was also awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries suffered in the explosion and sinking of the USS Swerve AM-121. He carried the metal surgically placed in his leg, hip and lower back for the rest of his life.
